The Guy is a Genius, July 7, 2004
Reviewer: Gail Haselbeck, Washington D.C.

I purchased this book after hearing about this book on the best sellers lists. All I can say is it was so fun to read and plain fascinating. I shared it with my family and have asked our company to try and get Eric Schiffer to speak at Warner Brothers where I have worked for seven years. What an amazingingly obvious yet sophisticated slant on a subject that has been around since Plato first utilized it. I highly recommend this book!

Emotionally Charged Research, August 24, 2003
Reviewer: Roger Miller, Detroit, Michigan

Will it come as a surprise that a thorough research endeavor, which set out to show how powerful emotions are in the learning process and when applied give the elements that businesses use to become great? Eric SchifferÕs work reads like a series of remarkable revelations, which provide insight on the processes of organizational learning and achieving greatness. What is perhaps most amazing about this work (and it is amazing in many ways) is how Schiffer created such a simple and readable book about an utterly complex subject. Schiffer set out to find what it takes to a make learning and training happen in the 21st Century. The book is a detailed explanation of the many elements of organizational learning greatness and how they contribute to a calculus of growth and improvement. This book will not disappoint anyone interested in organizational learning, culture, leadership or change. It is loaded with personal and organizational stories from the good to great companies. Nor will it trouble anyone interested in research as Schiffer includes detailed explanations of their methodologies throughout the book. This book will always have a special place on the book shelf. While it is fascinating and instructive on many levels, it has provided nourishment for my heart and soul. What it tells us is that great organizations and people are able to get better and grow and become the best they possibly can be.

Profound Insight, August 24, 2003
Reviewer:Thomas Gilder, New York, NY
This is a book that has profound insight which is nicely based on empirical data. It is refreshing to read a full case study written by an author who has walked the talk and who is in search of bettering himself by applying the rules learned during his research. In this book, you won't get deluged with concepts offered by an oracle who wants you to enact his insight. You get the facts as displayed through research into proven researched examples. The principals that are reported in this book are timeless and yet newly reported. From a biographical standpoint, you will learn how to be a better businessperson, teacher and human leader. As a person that loves leadership and training, I have spent many years reading books such as Situational leadership, The Leadership Engine and others. What Emotionally Charged Learning does is show you how it works in real life. It proves that building great organizations is a great understanding of today. Get this book, find a good highlighter and a few hours. This is one of few business books that you cannot afford to miss.

Research Drives this book, August 17, 2003
Reviewer: Janice Huffman, Atlanta Georga .
Wow! I've been something of a expert on business books for over 15 years going back to Drucker and Porter, but this is beyond a doubt one of the best I've ever encountered. What distinguishes it first is the rigor of the research that went into it. Many popular business books are long on ideas and supporting anecdotes, but short on actual research. This one is firmly grounded in exhaustive study and real numbers. Yet it doesn't read like a dry, clinical report at all. It's simply an extraordinarily lucid investigation of what allows companies and individuals to become great when so many of their peers remain just good. And frankly, I don't care how busy an executive is because the only excuse for not reading this book is a latent fear that he or she may not have the goods to execute and make their organization "emotionally charged". It's a wonderful book. (And a great gift for any Board member or senior Executive)

I
magine a book that ingites curiosity and thought and reads like a formula race car going into a turn on its last lap to victory. Hype? No, not in my case. I loved it. I just finished Fish! and it was on par but for different reasons. I know I will be a better manager for reading this book.

Learning Organization Candy, July 3, 2003
Reviewer: A Reader from Pacific Palisades, California
Having run a large department that focused on "calling" itself a learning organization, I know the challenges to motivate and inspire people to be excited about training and learning. This book reveals secrets to not only make the impossible possible but provides a roadmap to do it in a reasonable time period. Is it true that most companies could be more productive if they were able to be more efficient learning organizations? Yes. Is this book going to be the best way for you to do just that with your organization? It is not a cure all but, it is the best I have seen so far to make the concept become realized in the real world.-Reviewer: A reader from Pacific Palisades, ca United States

Making It All Count, September 4, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Santa Cruz, CA
Prior to this, I always felt dumb because I was really bad with academics. But with this book, and his revelations on emotionally charged learning, it made me feel smart again. We all have so many talents and intellect on many levels. The brain is so complex and it goes beyond just the four R's. Some of us may not be good at math but are brilliant at science. Some may be lousy at science but great in social environments. It was brought to my attention in SchifferÕs works that it's people that use emotions who tend to be more successful than folk with all the degrees but none of the common sense. This book takes his other revelations and applies it to business. Great Vision. A fascinating exploration into how the mind and emotions create lasting learning. Schiffer does a fine job relaying a wealth of complex data in a easy to read and compelling way. I have bought copies for all my managers.

Got it because of a class assignment and keep it for future leadership, September4, 2003
Reviewer: Richard Kornfield from Orlando, Fl
Eric SchifferÕs book, Emotionally Charged Learning is one of the best I have ever read on the topic. I am a business major and have done much research on leadership. This book really helped me identify how a leader best educates his people. I got this book for a class assignment, but I plan to keep it for future leadership plans. Leaders are not the only ones who should read this book, everyone should. I learned so much from the book that can be applied in every day life. The first section was the best, but the rest of the book supplemented the first section very well. Where other books have failed, Schiffer has triumphantly achieved. This book if used correctly can shape a leader out of anyone who abides by it. With plenty of examples and easy to understand language, Emotionally Charged Learning should be recommended for all. It is a must read for anyone about to enter the working world to people who have been there for a while. The material is so interesting taht this 130 page book flies by in no time at all. While reading all I wanted to do was see what was on the next page. This book really impressed me and changed a bit of my thinking. Now I am about to graduate in 2 weeks time and I feel much more comfortable in entering the "real world". A fascinating exploration into how the mind and emotions create lasting learning. Schiffer does a fine job relaying a wealth of complex data in a easy to read and compelling way. I have bought copies for all my managers.

Very easily digestible, high re-readability and worth hanging onto, September4, 2003
Reviewer: Terry Goesch (see more about me) from Asia
There are many books on learning leadership and this book stands out with its light and non-technical writing style. The first part of the book provides a good introduction to the science behind learning. I particularly enjoyed the discussion on how certain types of charged situations register the best in the brain.. It certainly gave me a new perspective on my relationship with my teammates. In the middle portion of the book, the author describes the process by which one may learn to be a better teacher and leader. The last part of the book describes emotionally charged learning when applied to teams and organization, a topic that can easily expand to another book. All thoughts expressed here are from a 36yr old technology designer and manager in Asia.

Extremely useful, September, 2003
Reviewer: winningleader from South Tallen, England
I found this book to be extremely useful. Eric Schiffer's view is that the main function of a leader is to manage the nexus between desired skill and learning in ones people. He outlines practical techniques to do this that are simple to implement, and may seem obvious to some, but will result in measurable performance improvement in your business. Your staff will be happier with clear goals and Rewards linked to Performance, communication will improve, and things will get done. Most companies I have seen, be they large or small, have a big gap between what the Board is trying to do strategically and what people actually do day to day. There are many examples of companies whose strategies sounded great but never really happened, resulting in catastrophic loss of value (eg the AOL Time Warner merger) and all because people were unable to learn or take in the training they were given. This is the only management book out of hundreds I have read that tells you how to fill this gap, and make your business achieve its strategic goals through learning. Others here have mentioned Jim Collins. While Built To Last and Good to Great were interesting case studies of successful large companies, they gave me nothing that I could implement immediately in my business. EricÕs book let me bring world class business practices into my small company.
